Friendships put aside at Paratriathlon Worlds in Lausanne

ITU - novinky - Čt, 29/08/2019 - 22:19
US training partners Allysa Seely and Hailey Danz will be two of the Paratriathletes to watch as the world’s best head to Lausanne, Switzerland, for the World Championship on Sunday. Seely and Danz arrive in the Swiss city as the top two ranked triathletes in the women’s PTS2, but it is a rivalry which stems from a very strong friendship. “When I first moved to Colorado Springs (to join the USA Para Triathlon Resident Team), I don’t think either of us were sure of how it would go,” Danz said. “I think both of us were surprised to learn that we had much more in common than we originally thought, and we quickly became close friends. “Every day, I get to see the bar that I am working towards, and that is unbelievably motivating. While we both want to succeed ourselves, both of us are invested in each other’s success, and do our part to bring out the best in each other.” Having claimed two Paralympic medals, four world titles, 52 podium spots and 28 international wins between them, Seely and Danz continue to be the triathletes to beat in the PTS2 classification (formerly PT2). “We have different strengths and weaknesses and push each other in different training sessions,” Seely sayid. “However, I have never felt competitive animosity towards her as many might expect. “I have no doubt that having Hailey next to me in the pool and on the roads has made me a better athlete, but the best part of our training relationship and friendship is I have never seen Hailey as a rival. I have and always will cheer for her success, and if someone is to beat me, I would undoubtedly hope it is her.” Confidence renewed The Tokyo 2020 Test Event earlier in August was unexpectedly changed to a duathlon, but Danz’ victory has given her confidence heading into the Grand Final, which includes the Paratriathlon World Championships. “I’m proud of how I was able to handle the sudden change of plans and adapt my game plan seamlessly,” Danz said. “I’ve got some really great momentum going right now and I’m feeling great physically and mentally, so I’m excited to see what I can do in Lausanne.” While victory in Lausanne would be Danz’s first world title since 2013, Seely could win back-to-back golds and a fourth world title. But the Paralympic champion knows she will have to be at her best. “The level of competition in Para triathlon has increased significantly since I started the sport, and it has been amazing to be a part of,” Seely...

ITU awards Ibiza the Multisport World Championships in 2022

ITU - novinky - Út, 27/08/2019 - 18:48
ITU is pleased to announce that its Executive Board has decided to award to the island of Ibiza, in Spain, the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in 2022. The Mediterranean island, that already hosted the European version of the event in 2018, is ready to welcome triathletes from all over the world for 10 days of sport at it its best. “The Multisport World Championships has been incredibly successful in the last few years since we launched this product, and we have seen not only a great interest from cities to bid to host this event, but also from athletes willing to compete”, said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. “And we are extremely proud of Ibiza willing to host this event, as a clear proof of the legacy of our events, returning to the island only a few years after hosting the European event”, she explained. The World Championships will see duathlon, long distance triathlon, aquathlon and cross triathlon championship races organized together during a week-long festival. This ground-breaking event now allows for athletes to compete in various multisport races, as opposed to electing only one each season. And participants can even vie for the Multisport Legend, a title reserved for those who compete in all four events. Ibiza was elected after presenting the Bid to the members of the Executive Board, who had the opportunity to compare the proposal from the Spanish island and from the city of Pesaro, in Italy, who was encouraged to continue bidding in future editions. The World Triathlon Multisport Championships made its debut in the ITU calendar in 2017 in Penticton (Canada), a successful event that was followed by Fyn (Denmark) in 2018 and Pontevedra (Spain) in 2019. Next year the event will travel to the city of Almere (The Netherlands), to be followed by Townsville (Australia) in 2021.

Zaferes eyes destiny, Learmonth, Taylor Brown and Spivey chase World title dreams

ITU - novinky - Út, 27/08/2019 - 13:28
It was down the closing stages of the Gold Coast Grand Final run that the 2018 World title slipped from Katie Zaferes’ fingers. The American had delivered the most consistent of seasons, only for Vicky Holland to surge past and into a top spot that had seemed so unlikely earlier in the year. This time around, Zaferes started her campaign with a bang and never looked back. World Series Gold in Abu Dhabi on the opening day of the season was just the start she wanted and, remarkably given how close she came to the biggest prize in 2018, her first in almost three years. That win was followed by another and then another, before silver in Leeds and a fourth gold in five attempts in Montreal. World title form if ever there was from the woman who has improved exactly one place in the overall rankings since 2015. But then bad luck in Hamburg left her short on points, and another bike accident in Tokyo two weeks ago was hardly the big-race preparation she would have wanted. There are few tougher or more resilient that Zaferes, however, and she knows that a safe ride and top 12 finish will guarantee her the World title, regardless of any other athletes’ results. Those chasing her have been doing so for much of the season. Great Britain’s Jessica Learmonth has had what you could consider a ‘Zaferes’ season of old; excellent performances, plenty of podiums but no wins. Victory would put Learmonth on 5420 points, five clear of Zaferes were the American to finish in 13th place, and if she delivers her usual lightning-fast swim, that could be just the early pressure she needs to apply on the rest of the field. Georgia Taylor Brown (GBR) has found the golden touch this year, home victory in Leeds followed with silver in Montreal to catapult her into contention. Third overall in the 2018 rankings, victory in Lausanne and a 15th place finish for Zaferes would mean an incredible World title for the 25-year-old. The final contender for overall glory, USA’s Taylor Spivey, would need several results to go her way to have a shot at the World title, but another strong year has seen her build on her breakthrough campaign in 2018. Spivey hasn’t finished outside the top 10 in a WTS race in 2019, landing silver in Abu Dhabi and bronze in Yokohama to leave her well placed for at least an overall podium. As with the men, the Grand Final start list is full of athletes for whom gold is very much in their reach, however. Last year it was Ashleigh Gentle (AUS) who...
